How do I get a Canadian visa ?

Obtaining a visa is a crucial step for foreign students wishing to do an internship in Canada.

This document is essential for entering Canada and remaining legally in the country for the duration of the internship. Without a visa, access to the Canadian job market is impossible, which can compromise the achievement of the internship objectives and the success of the student’s academic career.

Here are the general steps involved in obtaining a Canadian visa for an internship in Canada :

1. Determine the type of work visa for the internship

You can apply for different types of visa, depending on your needs.

2. Check your eligibility

You need to check whether you are eligible for a work visa for the internship. Eligibility criteria include age, education, English or French language proficiency, work experience and other requirements.

3. Gather the required documents

You must submit documents such as your passport, an internship agreement, international insurance, a clean criminal record and proof of funds.

4. Submit your application

You can complete your work visa application for an internship online by creating your IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) account. It is important to complete all sections of the application correctly and to provide all required documents.

5. EIC manages the visa/employer process

EIC handles the administrative procedures for companies concerning the visa of future interns (for the employer part): see below “visa assistance for companies“.

6. Wait the decision

It can take several weeks (usually between 4 and 8 weeks) to process your application for a work experience visa. You can track the status of your visa application on your IRCC account.

7. Fly to Canada

If your application for a work visa for an internship on Canadian soil is approved, you can travel to Canada and begin your internship.

NB: It’s important to note that the visa application process for an internship in Canada can be complex, and may vary depending on your citizenship and the type of internship you’ll be doing. It is therefore advisable to start the application process as early as possible, and to ask for help from our team specialized in visa assistance for internships in Canada.
